Sleep and weight loss

Shorter sleep hours are linked to weight gain. When you sleep for less than 6-7 hours, you are likely to gain weight rather than losing it. Also, poor sleep can lead to obesity in both children and adults.

New Delhi: The diet that you follow is not the only thing that affects your weight loss regime. Your exercises and your lifestyle have equal parts to play in your weight loss journey and therefore, it is important that along with eating healthy, you also follow a healthy lifestyle so that you get the results that you might be looking for.
Sleep too plays a major part in your weight loss journey. If you don’t sleep for certain hours or your sleep quality is bad, all your efforts of working out and eating restrictive diets will go down the drain. Here’s how sleep affects the process of your weight loss.
  1. Shorter sleep hours are linked to weight gain. When you sleep for less than 6-7 hours, you are likely to gain weight rather than losing it. Also, poor sleep can lead to obesity in both children and adults.
  2. Good sleep helps you make better food choices. When you don’t sleep properly, your brain is likely to make wrong choices as you might not have self-control and that might lead to weight gain. Also, when you don’t sleep properly, you are likely to turn to caffeinated drinks, which can ruin your diet.
  3. When you sleep on time, you avoid the chances of late-night snacking. Staying up long after dinner might make you hungry or might make you crave certain food. With this, you might end up binging food late at night which eventually adds up to the calories and you might end up adding some extra pounds rather than losing them.
  4. Not getting a good sleep might make you tired and fatigued. When you don’t get a good night’s sleep, you might wake up tired and that might stop you from exercising which will then add to your weight.
